American Tower has launched a new class of data center in Raleigh, North Carolina – within the state’s renowned Research Triangle region of Raleigh.
Raleigh consistently ranks among the top tech cities in the US and it’s also home to life sciences and drug discovery research and academic institutions.
American Tower’s global portfolio includes more than 149,000 communications sites.
Through American Tower’s acquisition of CoreSite, the company also has a highly interconnected footprint of US data center facilities, along with two decades of expertise providing colocation data center services.
The Raleigh Data Center is located at the base of American Tower’s existing cellular tower and provides mobile network operators, cloud service providers and content delivery networks the ability to extend services into a new market through advanced connectivity.
The Raleigh facility can scale rapidly to deliver multiple megawatts of power at full capacity. On average, the facility offers 15 kilowatts of power per rack.
To continue the momentum established in Raleigh, American Tower has identified more than 1,000 of its sites that can handle multiple megawatts of power and are technically feasible for future edge data center development. While the company says not all will be pursued, the portfolio is pitched as providing a strong foundation for evaluating where edge infrastructure can best meet emerging demand.
