Scala Data Centers, part of the Digital Colony Group, has demonstrated its commitment to environmental issues with its support for the Furukawa’s Green IT Program.

This aims to contribute to the proper disposal of communication and energy cables, in order to preserve the environment and reduce the use of non-renewable resources.

Stefan Potje, Data Center Manager, Scala, said: “We have an area in the company focused on environmental, social and corporate governance and, recently, we have become the first data center company in Latin America to migrate energy consumption entirely to renewable sources.”

Potje says that Scala currently has two data centers in operation and two others under construction, all in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, in addition to expansion projects in the state itself and in other countries in Latin America.

Using the Green IT Program, 2.437 kilograms of material were recycled from the company’s two data centers. This volume represents 1.219 kilograms of materials contaminated with heavy metals that were saved from being dumped in industrial landfills and released into the environment.

In addition, the recycling of the collected material led to a reduction in the extraction of copper and, also, a saving in energy consumption sufficient to supply 155 homes for one month.
