Vertiv and Oxigen collaborate to develop future-friendly, reliable, efficient data centre

Oxigen required scalable power and cooling solutions to cope with increasing demand.

Vertiv is collaborating with Oxigen, a leader in data hosting, processing and distribution services, to design and implement the company’s largest data centre.

Vertiv’s power and thermal solutions deliver scalability and energy efficiency, and its services provide comprehensive support, helping to position Oxigen as a benchmark for high-performance data centres in Spain.

Oxigen’s second and largest data centre, in Sant Cugat del Vallès, boasts 6,000m² (64,583 feet) of space – including a 3,000m² (32,292 feet) operations clean room – and has the capacity for up to 800 racks with multiple power and customisation options.

This scope allows Oxigen to quickly adapt to market needs such as continuously evolving AI projects. While the current infrastructure occupies only a portion of the available space, the facility is ready for expected growth.

The data centre is designed in line with Uptime Institute’s Tier III criteria, which certifies that the facility meets high standards of availability and redundancy, enabling enhanced resilience and connectivity.

Vertiv technology is seen as essential for the smooth and continuous operations of this data centre:

Vertiv has also provided Vertiv Critical Insight, a vendor-agnostic software that allows authorised personnel to visualise everything happening in the data centre in real time, enabling continuous monitoring of any critical digital infrastructure and its deployments onsite or remotely.

This mix of adaptable technologies, along with energy consumed coming from 100% renewable resources, enables increased energy efficiency and cost savings.

Benjamin Rovira, CEO, Oxigen, said: “We have been working with the Vertiv team for more than 20 years, during which they have always demonstrated exceptional professionalism and delivered state-of-the-art technology. Knowing both their products and their team well and having always achieved strong results, we trust their ability to adapt to our evolving requirements.”

The Oxigen data centre has 6MW of total power and up to 20 kW per rack to serve industries including the pharmaceutical, industrial, technological, education and public sectors. Oxigen customers expect their critical digital infrastructure to provide continuous uptime to support significant processing capability, consistent cooling and stored electricity – especially at peak hours.

Jordi Gonzalez Sandalinas, Enterprise Account Manager Vertiv, said: “The collaboration with Oxigen is testament to the ability of our solutions to adapt and expand with the customer’s needs. Our focus on energy efficiency, coupled with flexibility and ongoing support, allows Oxigen to grow without compromising the quality or security of its services. Over the years, we have built strong trust and demonstrated a deep knowledge of Oxigen’s needs, in addition to providing a broad and innovative portfolio of technologies. This is why the company has placed its full trust in Vertiv’s service team for the maintenance and management of the equipment.”

We asked Benjamin Rovira, CEO of Oxigen, further questions to find out more about the project.

What motivated Oxigen to collaborate with Vertiv for the design and implementation of your largest data centre in Sant Cugat del Vallès?

Oxigen chose Vertiv for its solid expertise in critical infrastructure and high-energy efficiency solutions. The Sant Cugat del Vallès data centre is the largest of our facilities, making it essential that we partnered with a reliable and well-established provider in the market, capable of delivering a scalable, secure and future-proof design.

Vertiv’s ability to integrate advanced cooling, energy management and monitoring systems has enabled us to build a state-of-the-art data centre that combines sustainability and high performance.

How does the facility’s scalability and ability to quickly adapt to market needs, such as AI projects, benefit your clients and position Oxigen in the industry?

Our infrastructure is designed to scale rapidly and adapt to evolving technological demands, including AI, Big Data and high-performance computing. With a modular design and high-power density per rack (up to 20 kW), we provide our clients with the flexibility to expand their operations seamlessly.

More and more, we encounter growing demand for dedicated private cloud services with high-performance computing powered by GPUs, particularly for AI applications, simulations and advanced data analytics. Our ability to adapt to these requirements positions us as an industry leader, offering top-tier hosting and colocation solutions for sectors requiring maximum power and reliability.

Could you elaborate on how the Uptime Institute’s Tier III certification ensures the reliability and resilience of your data centre operations?

The Tier III certification from the Uptime Institute guarantees that our data centre provides a high level of redundancy and fault tolerance. This means we can perform preventive maintenance without affecting service availability, thanks to an N+1 architecture that ensures uninterrupted operations even in the event of a critical component failure. This certification level allows us to offer clients a 99.982% uptime, ensuring maximum reliability in mission-critical environments.

Additionally, all our data centres are Tier III compliant, ensuring we uphold strict standards in design, operations and energy efficiency, delivering top-tier security and service quality to our clients.

How has Vertiv’s Critical Insight software enhanced the management and real-time monitoring capabilities of your data centre?

Vertiv Critical Insight provides real-time visibility into our data centre’s performance and efficiency. This software enables us to monitor and analyse critical data, such as energy consumption, temperature and system load, facilitating a rapid response to any incidents.

Furthermore, through predictive analytics and remote management, we can optimise resource allocation and continuously improve service availability, ensuring operational efficiency and sustainability.

Given that the energy consumed at your data centre comes from 100% renewable resources, how does Oxigen balance energy efficiency with the growing demand for power in high-performance environments?

At Oxigen, energy efficiency is a top priority. To minimise consumption without compromising performance, we implement advanced cooling systems, including Vertiv’s Free Cooling technology, which allows us to leverage external temperatures to reduce energy demand. This is combined with cold aisle containment within our racks, maintaining a temperature range aligned with ASHRAE recommendations, ensuring optimal efficiency and performance.

For power protection, we utilise modular UPS systems, optimising energy consumption and ensuring system redundancy. Additionally, we use lithium-ion batteries, which allow operations at higher temperatures without requiring additional cooling, further reducing our energy footprint.

Moreover, we rely exclusively on 100% certified renewable energy sources and optimise resource usage through virtualisation and intelligent workload management. This strategy enables us to operate a highly sustainable data centre, capable of meeting the growing demands of high-performance computing with maximum energy efficiency.

With 6MW of total power and up to 20 kW per rack, how do you ensure your data centre can meet the diverse needs of industries like pharmaceuticals, technology and education?

Our infrastructure is designed to provide flexibility and adaptability for various industries. For the pharmaceutical sector, we ensure security and regulatory compliance through strict control protocols and redundancy measures. In technology, we support high-performance workloads with high-density racks and ultra-fast connectivity. For the education sector, we offer scalable solutions that enable the management of large volumes of data and online services with reliability.

For the technology industry, where intellectual property is critical, we create dedicated environments to ensure that no resources are shared, and that all infrastructure meets the highest security standards required for IP protection. This allows our clients to operate in a fully isolated environment, safeguarding their most sensitive assets with maximum security and regulatory compliance.

Currently, our Sant Cugat site operates with a total power capacity of 6MW, but we have planned future expansions to increase this capacity beyond 15MW. This will allow us to meet growing market demands and continue providing high-density, high-performance solutions for our clients. Through a combination of power capacity, redundancy and scalability, Oxigen can meet the most demanding needs across all sectors.

Would you like to add any comments in conclusion?
